The resulting sensation is different from every other laptop keyboard I've used, even those on thin MacBook Pro clones like the Huawei MateBook X Pro. Using butterfly switches results in an extremely stable key (if you hit it off center, the depress is even), but also an extremely short distance to travel when you press the key. The first quirk is the keyboard, a slightly revamped version of Apple's beleaguered butterfly-switch design that has been a feature of MacBooks since 2016.

Last year's MacBook Pro refresh brought Intel's Core i9 CPU to a macOS laptop for the first time, while the latest update offers an even more powerful Core i9-an eight-core chip with a maximum boost speed of 5GHz. It's not unheard of, though, with the Dell Precision 5530 measuring 0.66 by 14.1 by 9.3 inches and weighing 3.9 pounds. Four pounds and 0.61 inch thick is remarkably svelte for a powerhouse 15-inch laptop.

Inside, Apple has been deploying progressively more powerful computing components into its flagship portable computer, an impressive feat when you consider that the chassis is the same size-0.61 by 13.75 by 9.5 inches (HWD)-and 4-pound weight as its predecessor. Viewed from the outside, it's the same machine that Apple has been selling since 2016, with a sleek aluminum chassis, a vivid Retina display, the now-familiar Touch Bar, and a gigantic touchpad. The 2019 MacBook Pro falls into the former category. Most years see minor updates, while every three years or so there's a complete overhaul.
